Google is giving you a reason to pay attention to fitness trackers again. Today, the company has announced the Fitbit Edge, a new wearable that sits between the screen-free Fitbit Air and the Pixel Watch lineup. The timing is interesting as Google has spent recent months expanding its health-focused features and wearables. The Fitbit Edge also arrives after a lengthy gap in the brand’s conventional fitness tracker lineup as the successor to the Fitbit Charge 6 that debuted in 2023.
Fitbit Edge joins Google’s wearable lineup
Borrows the best of Air and Pixel Watch 5
The Fitbit Edge brings the focus back to people who want a dedicated display while still having a minimalist look instead of a full-fledged smartwatch. It has a compact pill-shaped module that features a 1.34-inch AMOLED screen with an always-on display. This appeals to people who prefer on-wrist workout notifications and display-based interactions without pulling out a phone. There’s an elongated tactile button on the right side that can be used for certain actions. The fitness tracker is IP68 certified and water-resistant up to 50 meters.
Coming to fitness and health monitoring, the Fitbit Edge has an array of sensors which include ECG, PPG, and far-field skin temperature. The device is capable of tracking heart rate, sleep, menstrual cycle, and VO2 Max. The wearable device can also detect atrial fibrillation passively, irregular heart rhythms, and cardiac load. It supports 40 built-in exercise modes along with automatic workout detection. These are the same features that are already available on the Fitbit Air and Pixel Watch 5. The Edge also connects to the Google Health app and carries over insulin resistance trends and blood pressure from the search giant's latest-generation smartwatch.
Beyond this, the Fitbit Edge comes with a built-in GPS and some apps like Google Maps, music controls, and Find My Phone. Instead of the full wearOS experience, the device runs on Fitbit OS similar to the Air for a simpler UI. Do note that this is a tracker first and a mini smartwatch second, which seems to be exactly the point. The fitness tracker is backed by the same 7-day battery life as the screen less Fitbit Air. Furthermore, it works with both Android and iOS, instead of being limited to only one operating system.
Battery Life 7 days
Display 1.34-inch
The Fitbit Edge is a fitness tracker that sits between the Fitbit Air and Google Pixel Watch 5. It also debuts as the successor to the Fitbit Charge 6 from 2023.
How much does the Fitbit Edge cost?
The Fitbit Edge is priced at $180. It comes in colors matching the the Pixel 11 Pro—Obsidian and Matte Black, Olive and Satin Pyrite, Canyon and Champagne Gold, and Fog and Polished Silver. Pre-orders begin today with shipments commencing October 27. There's also a Stephen Curry limited edition that costs extra $50.
With the Fitbit Edge, Google is giving buyers another option rather than forcing them to choose between a screen less band and a more capable smartwatch.
